Thing 4

Thing 4 - RSS Reader Accounts

In the past I have steared away from subscribing to all of these information websites simply because you end up getting inundated with 10 emaqils a day giving you the same info over and over again.

BUT .... Google reader is great ...

It gives a list of topics to subscribe to ... in my case it was webdevelopment and backend programming ... great way to get the latest info without searching the web for that particular info.

See below for my Reader Account:

Thing 1

Thing1 - Read about the program
Have read the 23 "Things"
Very interesting ... have never looked at browser extensions before ... didnt even know about them.
I develop websites and have been asked about creating a Blog before ... because I have no experience in "Blogging" or creating Bloggs I have steared clear of this area so making us look at this side of the web along with the production of a website with a Blog in it will be very usefull in the future.

I am also very interested in adding youtube video to websites along with pod casting (what is it?) and especialy Image Generators.

Thing 2 - 3

Thing 2 - Extending your browser

Again I have never looked at that part of the browser ... knew it was there but never looked at what it was used for.

I added on the following extensions.

1/ Click on the downfacing arrow to view the chioices

2/ Click on "Find more providers" this gives you a list of extensions and addons

As you can see from the picture below I added:

  • The search bar Ask.com
  • Ebay.com search
  • Newscorp.com
3/ When you find the extension you want, click on it and the following window appears.

Just click "Add theprovider" to download the extension to your browser.

Add-ons

(I chose to upgrade my browser to IE8 to get the newer add-ons)
To add an add-on to your browser simply do the following:
If you look up at the tool bar you will see the "Favorites" tool bar
Look to the right of this tool bar and you will see a drop down menu titled "Get More Add-ons"

Simply copy and paste the link circled above or just click on the underlined link above it

This takes you through to the MicroSoft site where you can choose from a list of add-ons from different genre's such as:

  • News
  • Entertainment
  • health etc ...

I chose Photo's and Video menu and from this a new IE8 feature called Colliris.
Also because my girls are heavily into music I added the Radio & MP3 player

This is a new add-on that uses the Vista type search where pictures etc are streamed across the page.

Simply click on the button "Add to Internet Explorer

The following alert box then opens:

Save the file to your desired folder:
Navigate to the folder where the file has been saved and double click on the file to activate it.
The following window then appears:

Tick the checkbox to accept the license
The "Install" button is then activated
Click this to load the new add-on

Now you have the new add-on istalled on your browser.
